Super Cool Person Of The Week

It has been a while since I did a SCPOTW, so I thought I would get back on track with a really super cool person - Tony Wrenn! Tony plays guitar in the NHC band and has been a regular at NHC since the fall of '05. I'll never forget the first time I saw Tony at NHC. It was during the Desperate Households series and I looked down and there sat Tony on the front row! I had known Tony for almost as long as NHC has existed. (That means we're both old guys!) But to see him sitting on the front row was a pleasant surprise.

I also remember the first day Tony played for us. He was so nervous because he took what he was doing for God so seriously that he wanted to do his best. And he still takes what he does very seriously. Every week his playing personifies what it means to worship with an instrument. So, thanks Tony for all you do and for being a Super Cool Person!

Super Cool Person Of The Week

It's time for another SCPOTW and this time around it's two guys who have been hanging around NHC a lot these days. Cecil Powell (top photo) and Brad Bishop (bottom) have been working OVERTIME doing a makeover on our Uhambo Preschool environment. Brad designed a mural for the entire room featuring a jungle and animal theme and has been busily airbrushing clouds and mountains and all kinds of things on the walls. Cecil has been cutting out jungle animal figures that will go on the wall and give a 3-D look to the room. All the makeover work is slated to be done for our Family Ministry kick-off on September 2, so they've got lots of work to do before then. When you see them at NHC this weekend tell them they rock! And you might want to compliment Brad on his super cool tattoos!
   

Super Cool PEOPLE Of The Week

It's back! After an absence over the last few weeks, the Super Cool Person Of The Week feature is back, only this time it's Super Cool PEOPLE Of The Week. Who are they? All 32 people who showed up last Saturday for our clean up day to help keep our facility in tip-top shape. They mowed grass...weeded traffic islands...pressure washed the sidewalk...cleaned windows...cleaned air filters...picked up stray trash...and lots of other stuff that I probably don't even know about. And they did it all "behind the scenes."

Why? Because they know that every Sunday there are guests who come to experience our NHC environments. They understand that the cleanliness and appearance of our facilities just might make a difference in how someone receives the message that day. They understand that the sermon begins way before I ever step on stage.

So to all 32 of you who worked up a sweat last Saturday - YOU ARE SUPER COOL!

Super Cool Person Of The Week

When I started this weekly post my goal was to highlight some of our dedicated volunteers who bring it home week in and week out around NHC, but this week I want to highlight the NHC staff. Years ago I heard John Maxwell say, "Your success will be determined by who's gathered around you." That's true around here at NHC. Most of what happens here that is good is because of who we have gathered together on this team.

NHC you are blessed to have a great staff. They are all committed to their marriages (except for Jamie and he'll be taking care of that in just a couple of weeks!). They all pray over their ministries and for our church. They have a "whatever it takes" attitude. They're committed to excellence. They get the vision and they're committed to it. But most important of all, they're sold out to Jesus and helping people come to know Him.

So here's a shout out to...Mark, Leah, Adam, Greg and Jamie. You guys make me think of one of my life verses: From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it. Matthew 11:12.

Let's keep rockin' for Jesus!

Super Cool Person Of The Week

The Super Cool Person Of The Week this week is actually more than one person...it's the Men In Stripes...the Sunday Security team.

The guys in the pic are from left to right, back row: Chris Gilham, Jason Bullock, Dace Hilton. Front row: Chuck McLean, Spencer Husen and John Strobel. The three newest members of this team are missing from the photo: Tom Jenkins, Jay Nesbit and Matt Haugh.

These guys collectively do so much it's hard to list it all, but I'll give it a shot. Chris leads our Janitorial team...Jason leads the Set up/Tear down team...Chuck is also known as our resident chef, barbeque wizard, and floor buffer...Dace leads the Security team for our Sunday services (that's why they wear the referee shirts!)...John, Tom, Jay and Matt all serve on the Security team. Spencer, our Jr. Security team member serves on the Security team and brings his mom and dad to NHC every Sunday!

All the guys are married (except for Spencer!) and their wives all serve in various ministries at NHC too. So, when you see some guys running around in striped shirts this Sunday give them a high five and tell them what a great bunch of guys they are. They're super cool!

Super Cool Person Of The Week

Zoie Hoolzknecht is this weeks' Super Cool Person.

For those who don't know Zoie she does LOTS of things at NHC. Zoie has been a major player in our Kid's and Student ministries for several years. She currently serves as a Student Small Group Leader and Chaplain for the Kidzoogle Dance Team. And she even speaks for youth events from time to time. Zoie has also been a key person on the Xalt team, helping to design and implement the Journeys for Christmas and Easter.

Zoie lives with her husband Rob and her Pug dog and works at Duke. She is one of the most humble, faithful, authentic and creative people I know, and she has a "whatever it takes" attitude - especially when it comes to helping our kids and teenagers.

When you see her at NHC this week let her know you think she rocks!

Super Cool Person Of The Week

Today I'm starting a new post category: Super Cool Person of the week. It may not be posted every single week, but most weeks I'll feature someone from NHC who's going above and beyond the call to help serve God's purposes through NHC.

For the first ever Super Cool Person Of The Week I want to send props out to Connie Odum. Connie and her husband Rob have been married for 17 years and have a 15 year old son named Christopher. Rob and Connie began attending NHC about a year and a half ago and Connie has recently stepped up her serving BIG TIME!

Connie has one of the most contagious attitudes I have been around in a while. She's a real cheerleader for NHC! So she's putting that to good use in the lobby on Sunday mornings. She has single-handedly taken on the task of spotting and greeting first time guests and making sure they get to where they need to go. I'm not sure how she spots them, but I hear she has a pretty finely tuned method. And now she's working with Jamie McDonald, NHC's Pastor of Connections, to develop a team of people who will make our first time guests feel welcomed.

On top of all that Connie also serves as an administrative volunteer in our offices 8-10 hours every week! Connie seriously helps NHC to be the great place it is every week. When you see her in lobby this week let her know how much you appreciate what she's doing and that she's a Super Cool NHC'er!
